Can a rideshare driver pay for their own background check?
Yes. A rideshare driver can order a background check on themselves and hold the finished report to show private-hire clients, black-car operators, or a city licensing office. Large rideshare apps usually require their own vendor, so confirm before ordering if the report is meant for one of them.
Why clients ask rideshare drivers for a background check
- Passengers ride alone with the driver and cannot leave mid-trip.
- Impaired or reckless driving history is the single strongest predictor of a passenger injury.
- Many cities and airports run their own for-hire permit requirements on top of the app's.
- Vulnerable passengers — minors, intoxicated riders, elderly riders — are routine, not rare.
What the check should include
These are the searches we would run for a rideshare driver. A contractor ordering their own report gets the same searches an employer-ordered check would use.

Who pays, and how contractor-paid works
When a rideshare driver orders the report, they pay at checkout, the finished report is delivered to them, and they decide who sees it — one report, shown to every client who asks. When a platform or company orders it instead, the company holds the report and carries the adverse action obligations that come with using it to make a decision.

Questions rideshare drivers ask
How far back does a rideshare background check go?
Criminal reporting limits are set by the FCRA and by state law — several states cut non-conviction reporting at seven years, and a few limit conviction reporting too. Driving records follow the state motor vehicle agency's own retention rules. Our lookback lookup shows the limit by state.
Will a DUI keep me off a rideshare platform?
Usually within the platform's lookback window, yes. Standards differ by company and by state, and an older single offense is treated differently than a recent one.
Can I use one report for more than one company?
You can share a report you paid for with anyone you choose. Whether a given company accepts it is up to that company.
Does a rideshare check include a drug test?
Not by default. Some for-hire permits and corporate transport contracts require one; it can be added.
